# Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs are the small trail above a page's title, such as Home / Clothing / Knitwear. Each link leads to a page above the one you are on. They come with the theme and need no setup.

## Where they show

| Page | Trail |
|---|---|
| A page with the default template or **Wide page** | Home / the page |
| The shop | Home / Shop |
| A product category | Home / its parent categories / the category |
| A product tag | Home / Products tagged “the tag” |
| A product | Home / its category's parents / its category |
| The journal (your posts page) | Home / Journal |
| A journal category, tag, author or year | Home / Journal / the category, tag, author or year |
| A post | Home / Journal / the post's category |

A page placed under another page shows its parent in the trail. On a product or a post the trail leads up and stops at the category, because the name is the page's title right below it. Journal is your posts page's title, whatever you call it.

The home page, the cart, the checkout, the account, search results, the "page not found" page and pages with the **Page without title** template have no breadcrumbs.

## Add a Shop level

By default the trail starts with your categories, as most stores' menus do: Home / Clothing / Knitwear. If your store presents the shop as one section of the site, WooCommerce can put the shop page above every category and product: Home / Shop / Clothing / Knitwear.

1. Go to **Settings → Permalinks**.
2. Under **Product permalinks**, choose **Shop base** or **Shop base with category**.
3. Select **Save Changes**.

This also changes your product addresses: products move under the shop page's address, such as `/shop/sample-product/`. The Shop level does not show when the shop is your home page.
